How to choose the right social media platform for your business

Choosing the right social media platform is essential for successful brand communication. Each platform has its own audience, formats and ways of interacting. Here is an overview of six major platforms, their key benefits and the businesses they suit.

Instagram

Instagram is a visual platform focused on aesthetics and lifestyle content. It suits brands that want to connect through emotion, visual identity and community building, particularly in fashion, beauty, fitness, food and creative industries.
Its audience mainly consists of people aged 18–35, though the share of older users is growing. Reels, Stories and high-quality photographs with concise captions attract the most attention.
Instagram stands out for strong interaction, fast-moving trends and an emphasis on visual style and authenticity.

Facebook

Facebook is the most versatile platform, suitable for a wide range of brands and organisations. Its broad reach across age groups makes it ideal for communication aimed at a mass audience.
Its audience is diverse, with strong representation among users aged 30+, parents, people in smaller towns and older generations. It offers a variety of formats: posts, videos, events, groups and longer texts.
Facebook offers a robust advertising system for precise targeting, as well as strong community features through groups.

LinkedIn

LinkedIn is a platform for professionals and B2B communication. It is ideal for brands seeking to strengthen their expertise, employer branding or business opportunities.
Its audience includes managers, specialists, HR professionals and people seeking career growth. Articles, expert posts, company news and thought leadership content work well.
LinkedIn has a more formal tone and an emphasis on expertise. Professional, valuable content can earn a high level of trust.

Twitter (X)

Twitter, now X, is a platform for fast communication, news and immediate reactions. It suits brands that need to communicate quickly and keep messages timely, often with a lighter touch.
Its audience includes journalists, politicians, experts, technology enthusiasts and people following events in real time. Formats include short texts, threads, images, links and short videos.
Twitter stands out for its speed, direct audience interaction and emphasis on concise, responsive communication.

YouTube

YouTube is the largest video platform and an ideal place for educational, entertaining and product-related videos. It suits brands that want to build lasting trust and provide value through video content.
Its audience spans all ages, from children to older adults. Videos that offer value work best: tutorials, reviews, interviews, vlogs and documentary-style content.
YouTube is strongly driven by search: users actively look for answers. This makes it valuable for SEO and organic reach.

TikTok

TikTok is built around short, fast and authentic videos. It is ideal for brands seeking to reach younger generations through creative, informal communication.
Its audience mainly consists of people aged 13–30, though older users are growing rapidly. Trending videos, educational quick tips, storytelling and entertaining content work best.
TikTok’s algorithm can give even small creators substantial organic reach. Creativity and authenticity matter more than polished production.

Social media is a key channel for brand building, customer relationships and sales. Each platform has its own audience, character and content that works best. Success means choosing the platforms that make sense for your business and target audience, rather than trying to be everywhere.

If you are unsure which platforms to choose or how to communicate effectively on them, our agency would be happy to help.
